Improper or non maintenance is the number one reasons for septic systems failures in Florida, most homeowners in the state of Florida don’t realize that septic systems need to be properly maintained to reduce the high percentage of failures. Small households (3-4 people) should have their septic system checked by a state licensed contractor every 3-5 years. Larger households (5 or more) should have their septic system checked by a state licensed contractor every 18 – 36 months. Larger households typically fail due hydraulic overload, this is when the septic system is receiving more waste water than the system was originally designed to handle, when this occurs the homeowner has two options to prolong the failure of the system. 1) Maintain the system more frequently to help improve the water quality leaving the system. 2) Replace the system with more drain field area designed to handle a larger volume of water. Remember your septic system is a living breathing organism; anything that will harm you will harm your septic system.
